Your Voice is Important

How do we work towards inclusivity in Brandon & Westman?

With the rise of hate crimes, racism, and xenophobia in Brandon and communities across Canada, we need to engage with these issues to deepen our collective understanding to make positive change.

Individuals, students, educators, groups, businesses, and organizations are invited to join this conversation moderated by Dr. Michelle Lam of BU CARES.

Together, we can engage in a meaningful discussion about the opportunities for inclusion and the barriers that are keeping immigrants, newcomers, and locals from achieving it.

Community Voices is a town hall platform to bring together individuals, groups, organizations, and researchers to explore important issues that impacts Brandon, the Westman Region, and Manitoba.

By creating an inclusive, non-partisan environment the community can openly meet to safely share perspectives, ideas, and challenges, thus cultivating a deeper level of understanding, and broader community engagement.

Through this process, there will be valuable opportunities for individuals, groups, and organizations to contribute towards the collective understanding of the issues, and inform key recommendations.

In addition to guided dialogue, Community Voices will aim to provide participants access to useful resources, local research findings, and new language to further navigate discussions in a personal or professional setting.

While topics evolve based on community needs and emerging issues, discussions will be relevant to locals, immigrants, and newcomers. With that in mind, it will also be relevant to all organizations serving, or interacting with locals, immigrants, and newcomers.

To encourage a respectful safe environment, communication will be facilitated in either a virtual or physical town hall format. Participation is free and requires prior online registration. Participants recognize that speaking time will be facilitated to allow for broad community engagement.

In an interest to develop a community platform that facilitates trust, dialogue, and knowledge exchange around important community issues, Community Voices founding members include the Brandon Local Immigration Partnership, and the Centre for Aboriginal and Rural Education Studies. It is supported by numerous community partners including the Interdisciplinary Immigration Research Network.
